“You’d really do this, leave your only child to rot?” She sighed, swallowed back her tears. “You don’t care about me. Fine. But wait until he’s born, please, please, just do that. Take him with you. Don’t leave him here with… with me.” Because I would wreck her life. He ignored her, kept mechanically pushing her away. He wouldn’t look at her, but she looked at him and saw the crushing guilt in his face, and she felt dreadful for putting him through it all. She let go. He glanced at her face for just a second, then turned and walked out of the door. He didn’t look back. She could have followed him, but there was no point. He would have run away from her. In her state Merope couldn’t possibly hope to keep up with him. |
